Guatemala Travel - Best Places To Visit And Things To Do

Guatemala Travel - Best Places To Visit And Things To Do

One of the favorite areas to visit during vacations in Central America is the southern coast of Guatemala. I know these beaches are nowhere as beautiful as the surrounding countries such as Mexico or Honduras but you still can have a lot of fun.

Here are some places you can visit and things you can do:

Monterrico

This is the most popular destination of the region. It is a black sanded beach where you will be able to take a look at sea turtles nesting or hatching (depending on the season). It doesn't have many lodging options but some are very good.

* Hawaii Park (Parque Hawaii)
* Biotope Monterrico-Hawaii
* Tortuguerio Monterrico
* Turtle tours

Retalhuleu

It is also known as Reu for the locals. This area became popular because it is home to Guatemala's greatest amusement parks. There are also nearby Mayan ruins worth visiting.

* Takalik Abaj
* Xocomil Water Park
* Xetulul Amusement Park

Puerto San Jose

Al though Monterrico is the most popular place among locals San Jose is the most visited place. That is because it is closer to Guatemala City. I recommend visiting this place for those travelers that want to do some fishing.

* Sailfishing
* Ostrich Farm
* Aqua Magic

The Popular Beach Town - Monterrico

This is a top beach destination of Guatemala and the most popular beach among locals. It consists of a teeny tiny town very limited with accommodations. However it has been quickly developing in the last couple of years.

It is a beautiful and quiet black sanded beach backed by coconut palms and mangrove. But by far the best attributes of the region are its natural charms.

The best places to visit in the area for nature lovers are:

* Parque Hawaii (Hawaii Park),
* Reserva Natural de Monterrico (Monterrico Nature Reserve),
* Tortuguerio Monterrico.

What to Do

* Birdwatching
* Boat tours along the mangrove canals
* Turtle tours at night
* Volunteering at Tortuguerio Monterrico

Lanquin Town

Lanquin is a small town located in the Alta Verapaz Department, Central Highlands of Guatemala. It is the closest town to the super popular Lanquin Caves. The most common way to get there is from the nearby and much bigger town of Coban. You can get there by driving through a dirt road along Cardamom plantations.

This tiny town is just minutes away from one of Guatemala's most famous attractions after Antigua and Tikal, the Lanquin Cave System. Lanquin is a series of limestone formations under the ground so big that no explorer has ever gotten to where they end.

Some tours that are offered in the area are:

* Horseback riding
* Rafting the Río Cahabón
* Hiking the Lanquin Caves

Places you gotta visit:

* Biotopo Mario Dary Rivera
* Semuc Champey Natural Monument
* Candelaria Caves National Park
